A Comparative Analysis of the Morphological Characteristics of Elite Karatekas, Judokas, Taekwondoists, Boxers and Wrestlers International Journal of Morphology
Malacko,Julijan; Doder,Dragan; Stankovic,Veroljub; Dokmanac,Milorad; Savic,Biljana; Doder,Radoslava.
The aim of this research was to use a system of 37 variables of morphological characteristics on a sample of 108 elite male athletes (25 karatekas, 27 judokas, 19 taekwondoists, 18 boxers and 19 wrestlers), aged 17 to 23, to determine any statistically significant differences between the groups of athletes in terms of variable means, so that during the training process, the selection of athletes could be carried out in a proper and objective manner and that the training transformation processes could be managed more effectively. After processing the data using the statistical method of a multivariate and univariate analysis of variance (MANOVA/ANOVA), we obtained results that indicate that among the karatekas, judokas, taekwondoists, boxers and wrestlers...

A Comparison of Threshold Cointegration and Markov-Switching Vector Error Correction Models in Price Transmission Analysis AgEcon
Ihle, Rico; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
We compare two regime-dependent econometric models for price transmission analysis, namely the threshold vector error correction model and Markov-switching vector error correction model. We first provide a detailed characterization of each of the models which is followed by a comprehensive comparison. We find that the assumptions regarding the nature of their regime-switching mechanisms are fundamentally different so that each model is suitable for a certain type of nonlinear price transmission. Furthermore, we conduct a Monte Carlo experiment in order to study the performance of the estimation techniques of both models for simulated data. We find that both models are adequate for studying price transmission since their characteristics match the underlying...

Comparative Wood Anatomy of the Primuloid Clade (Ericales s.l.) Naturalis
Lens, F.; Jansen, S.; Caris, P.; Serlet, L.; Smets, E..
The wood structure of 78 species from 27 genera representing the woody primuloids (Maesaceae, Myrsinaceae, and Theophrastaceae) was investigated using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that the ray structure, the nature of mineral inclusions, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays can be used to separate the three primuloid families from each other. Within Ericales, the presence of exclusively multiseriate rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae and Theophrastaceae, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae. Within Myrsinaceae, the wood structure of the mangrove genus Aegiceras differs because it has short vessel elements that are storied, non-septate fibers, a...

Comparison of several demand systems AgEcon
Meyer, Stefan; Yu, Xiaohua; Abler, David G..
Using Monte-Carlo simulation, , we compare the most popular demand systems including the LES, AIDS, BTL, QES, QUAIDS and AIDADS, and find that different models actually have different advantages in estimating different elasticities. Specifically, QES, AIDS and AIDADS models are the best in income, own-price and cross-price elasticities, respectively. Overall, AIDADS model has the best performance. The results indicate that the rank three models are not necessary always better than the rank two models.

Efficiency of snake sampling methods in the Brazilian semiarid region Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mesquita,Paulo C.M.D.; Passos,Daniel C.; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The choice of sampling methods is a crucial step in every field survey in herpetology. In countries where time and financial support are limited, the choice of the methods is critical. The methods used to sample snakes often lack objective criteria, and the traditional methods have apparently been more important when making the choice. Consequently researches using not-standardized methods are frequently found in the literature. We have compared four commonly used methods for sampling snake assemblages in a semiarid area in Brazil. We compared the efficacy of each method based on the cost-benefit regarding the number of individuals and species captured, time, and financial investment. We found that pitfall traps were the less effective method in all...

Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Hopp,Philipp Werner; Caron,Edilson; Ottermanns,Richard; Roß-Nickoll,Martina.
Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil. To evaluate the reliability of data obtained by Winkler extraction in Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil, we studied litter beetle assemblages in secondary forests (5 to 55 years after abandonment) and old-growth forests at two seasonally different points in time. For all regeneration stages, species density and abundance were lower in April compared to August; but, assemblage composition of the corresponding forest stages was similar in both months. We suggest that sampling of small litter inhabiting beetles at different points in time using the Winkler technique reveals identical ecological patterns, which are more likely to be influenced...

Evaluation of different predicting methods in forecasting Hungarian, Italian and Greek lamb prices AgEcon
Fenyves, Veronika; Orban, Ildiko; Dajnoki, Krisztina; Nabradi, Andras.
The Hungarian sheep sector has become a one-market sector, almost the whole amount of slaughter lamb went to Italy. It would worth to exploit possibilities in other European markets. Such markets can be the Spanish and Greek for ”light” and the French, German and English markets for ”heavy” lambs. The European lamb prices are characterized by large seasonal fluctuation and the degree and timing of changes are different. Due to these seasonal changes, the producers often suffer great losses. Study of the literature on lamb sales called for an analysis of price forecasting. In my study, I performed a forecasting of lamb prices in Hungary, Italy and Greek for the period between 1996 and 2007 based on the data of the European Committee. Among the forecasting...

Habitats et communautés benthiques du bassin oriental de la Manche : état des lieux au début du XXIe siècle ArchiMer
Foveau, Aurelie.
This study is devoted in providing an updated knowledge on the macrobenthic community structure and biodiversity in the eastern English Channel in the early 2000s. Results obtained were compared with results obtained by L. Cabioch and colleagues for the period of 1971-1976. The distribution of macrobenthic communities is highly governed by the sedimentary cover. The Folk classification was used for sedimentology and mapping of bottom type characterization for the two study periods. A relative stability of the sedimentary cover was observed wherein 69% of the study area showed slight or no change in sedimentary cover. This is mainly due to the hydrodynamics in the area which is the dominant structuring factor in the eastern English Channel. Variations were...

Round Robin Assessment of Radar Altimeter Low Resolution Mode and Delay-Doppler Retracking Algorithms for Significant Wave Height ArchiMer
Schlembach, Florian; Passaro, Marcello; Quartly, Graham D.; Kurekin, Andrey; Nencioli, Francesco; Dodet, Guillaume; Piollé, Jean-francois; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Bidlot, Jean; Schwatke, Christian; Seitz, Florian; Cipollini, Paolo; Donlon, Craig.
Radar altimeters have been measuring ocean significant wave height for more than three decades, with their data used to record the severity of storms, the mixing of surface waters and the potential threats to offshore structures and low-lying land, and to improve operational wave forecasting. Understanding climate change and long-term planning for enhanced storm and flooding hazards are imposing more stringent requirements on the robustness, precision, and accuracy of the estimates than have hitherto been needed. Taking advantage of novel retracking algorithms, particularly developed for the coastal zone, the present work aims at establishing an objective baseline processing chain for wave height retrieval that can be adapted to all satellite missions. In...

Sensitivity, specificity and comparison of three commercially available immunological tests in the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium species in animals BJM
Danišová,Olga; Halánová,Monika; Valenčáková,Alexandra; Luptáková,Lenka.
ABSTRACT The study was conducted to compare the specificity of immunological diagnostic methods used for the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium species capable of causing life-threatening infection in both immunosuppressed and immunocompetent patients. For the detection of Cryptosporidium species in 79 animals with diarrhoea, we used three Copro-antigen tests: RIDASCREEN® Cryptosporidium test, Cryptosporidium 2nd Generation (ELISA) and RIDA®QUICK Cryptosporidium. For immunoassays we used positive and negative samples detected by means of polymerase chain reaction and validated by sequencing and nested polymerase chain reaction to confirm the presence six different species of Cryptosporidium species. Prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in the entire group determined...

Speaking Stata: Graphing agreement and disagreement AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Many statistical problems involve comparison and, in particular, the assessment of agreement or disagreement between data measured on identical scales. Some commonly used plots are often ineffective in assessing the fine structure of such data, especially scatterplots of highly correlated variables and plots of values measured “before” and “after” using tilted line segments. Valuable alternatives are available using horizontal reference patterns, changes plotted as parallel lines, and parallel coordinates plots. The quantities of interest (usually differences on some scale) should be shown as directly as possible, and the responses of given individuals should be identified as easily as possible.
